HIV/AIDS and STD Outreach, Awareness and Education

The HIV/AIDS and STD (sexually transmitted diseases) outreach, awareness and education is now the main GHI program. This program was first carried out in 2003 in St. Thomas, USVI and is now carried out several times a year at scheduled outreaches in St. Thomas and Sierra Leone and also upon request by community and governmental organizations.

This program includes basic HIV/AIDS and major STD education:

Diseases and topics covered in the education session are:

1. Definition of:

  • HIV
  • AIDS
  • Chlamydia
  • Gonorrhea
  • Syphilis
  • HPV
  • Herpes
  • Hepatitis

2. Pathophysiology of said diseases
3. Transmission of said diseases
4. Incidence/prevalence of said diseases
5. Prevention

  • Abstinence
  • Condom Demonstration
    • Male
    • FC female condom (introduced into outreach during February 2008 mission to Sierra Leone)

HIV in-a-minute© - While in the brothels, and other less secure locations, Mrs. Washington-Turay, Founder of God’s House, presents what she has coined “HIV in-a-minute”: A brief description of the virus, how it is transmitted into the body and how to prevent transmission. Condoms are then distributed.

Approximately 80 hours are devoted to this program per year. The 80 hours include organization preparation and execution of the program.

Focus group: Primarily males and females between the ages of 9 and 45. Persons over the age of 45 are also target, however, not as a main focus group. Sessions are tailored to fit the needs of each specific group.

States/Countries that currently participate in HIV/AIDS and STD Outreach: St. Thomas, USVI, Sierra Leone, St. Coix, USVI, Alaska
